Singapore International Volunteers, comprising TTSH’s renal care specialists, trained close to 260 Vietnamese healthcare practitioners. From the group, 12 were selected to become Master Trainers, who shared their newly-acquired knowledge with more than 150 healthcare professionals.

The project included six workshops and lectures, comprising basic, intermediate, and advanced modules for haemodialysis healthcare professionals. Hospital leaders and senior management also took part in joint discussions about quality assurance and standardised protocols for care in central and provincial hospitals in Vietnam.

After going through the project, the participating hospitals implemented a set of Catheter Care guidelines , which includes providing a Catheter Care Kit for each dialysis patient, to enhance patient care. The hospitals also adopted the seven-step hand washing process in their operations.

Post-workshop, nurses can now perform catheter care, apply maintenance techniques before and after dialysis session, assess the quality and flow of the catheter and detect signs of infection. Previously, all these could only be done by doctors. This improved efficiency and speed of performing catheter care and reduced the infection and re-infection rate. The nurses are also more confident now and are better able to assess vascular access before needling. Overall, this project has improved the quality of care for approximately 2,570 kidney patients in North Vietnam.

Outcomes

This project upgraded the skills and knowledge of doctors, nurses and allied healthcare staff with regard to the care and treatment of babies under five kilograms with complex heart conditions. Six training sessions were conducted for 20 Master Trainers in the cardiac unit. After this experience, trainees reported more confidence in performing surgery, increased teamwork, improvement in infection control and better knowledge of basic cardiac surgery for babies under five kilograms.
