Early Childhood Education (ECE) Curriculum Enhancement and Pedagogy Project in Mumbai, India

Host Partner
Muktangan Education Trust (India)

Singapore Partner
Individual volunteers from Singapore’s ECE sector

Project aim
To increase the quality of early childhood education in Mumbai by upskilling ECE educators who work with children aged three to eight years old.

Outcomes

For five years, our team of Singapore International Volunteers (SIVs), comprising pioneers and leaders from the Singapore ECE sector, worked with about 700 Indian educators across 29 organisations in Mumbai. They engaged in eight workshops, a virtual study visit and a symposium to exchange knowledge, skills, and resources to enhance classroom curriculum, teaching practices, and assessment skills.

The project also saw 34 Indian ECE educators trained as Master Trainers. They were taught the relevant skills and knowledge to train other ECE educators. As a result, at least 3,400 Indian ECE educators learnt how to improve curricula and picked up new pedagogical and assessment skills. They also learned how to develop their own assessment tools. This, in turn, benefitted more than 45,000 educators and students in Maharashtra.

The SIVs also developed an online resource for the Muktangan Education Trust teachers. The Facilitation Guide includes content from the workshops and will be useful for continued learning and pedagogical skill development of the ECE practitioners.

Hear from Our Project Participant

“Our 25 teachers from the rural childcare centres gained a lot from the programme and theories of child development. They are now confident to write lesson plans independently and creatively. Every week, these teachers meet and exchange their lesson plans so there is a lot of sharing and exchange of ideas.”
